Monday, October 16, 2017 (Day 4)

ELA 9B

The students read for ten minutes.  Then we discussed themes for Remembrance Day Poems (heroes, villains, death, families, bravery, First World War, Second World War, veterans) and point of view.  The students had some time to discuss ideas with a partner and then time to plan and start their rough draft.  Students will be handing in their planning sheet/rubric,  their rough draft (in their poetry notebook), and their good copy, which will be due at the end of class on Wednesday.

FRENCH 8B

Three students were in the Chaise Chaud.  Then the students went through their être quizzes.  Finally students had time to finish and e-mail their avoir/être posters to me.  Anyone who completed the previous task then had time to work on the Duolingo app.

COMPUTERS 8

The students finished practicing with formulae in Google Sheets, a spreadsheet.

ADDING
=SUM(cell:cell)      example:  =SUM(C2:C18)
=C2+D2+E2

SUBTRACTING
=D2-C2

MULTIPLYING
=D5*D4
=D5*3

DIVIDING
=C5/C1
=C5/2

AVERAGE
=AVERAGE(C2:C16)

They then started on their summative task by choosing an item they wish to buy and calculating its cost with taxes and shipping.

ELA 9A

The students read for ten minutes.  We then watched the last part of "Storming Juno" and students finished their video analysis and handed it in.  Next we discussed a variety of poetry styles which may have a rhyme scheme (ABAB or ABCB or AABBA) or may use a repetitive phrase at the start or end of each stanza or may be a paragraph cut into phrases to create a poem or may be free verse.  We also went through the rubric for their Remembrance Day poem and discussed possible themes (remembrance, Soldiers, family, suffering, fighting, peace, pacifists, Red Cross, Heroes, enemies, locations).  The students had some time to brainstorm with a partner and fill out their planning sheet before starting a rough draft. They will have one more writing day, and it will be due at the end of class on Wednesday.
