Anyone who wanted to reassess 1s and 2s from the summative assessment for Hauntings or Hokum?  handed in Flying Frisbees with a new rubric.  If you were absent  and want to re-assess see Miss Riddell when you return.  We also did the Look-alike/Sound-alikes for Past/Passed and Quiet/Quit/Quite.

Wednesday, October 28, 2020 (Day 2)

 ALT ELA

Today we finished up "The Landlady" by looking at the story plot.  It is different than most stories because it ends at the rising action.  The climax, falling actions, and resolution are all inferred but never really told in the story.  We assume young Billy realizes he has been poisoned and that the dies and the landlady stuffs him but we aren't actually told that in the story.  The video showed more of the story.  We also did the Making it Personal.

Then we prepared for the next story "The Monkey's Paw."  We did the pre-reading discussion and then we did the vocabulary study before reading the story.  Then we answered the questions about the story and discussed the literary terms used in the story.

ELA 7C

We corrected the Fill-Ins and Antonyms from yesterday.  We then watched the video below, discussed punctuation and did several examples together.  The students completed the sections on Punctuation and Summarizing (putting paragraph two into one sentence of 15 words or less.)  Most students started on their final paragraph on one of the three topics listed in their booklets.  Students also had time to read and some had time for Typing Tutor.

Tuesday, October 27, 2020

Tuesday, October 27, 2020 (Day 1)

 ELA 7C

We completed the next two sections of Flying Frisbees: Fill-Ins and Antonyms. Remember to use headings and spacing and copy carefully. If you did not receive 3s or 4s on the summative for "Hauntings or Hokum?" you have a chance to re-assess with your "Flying Frisbees." Please do on loose leaf at home and we'll attach it to your notebook when you return. All information is posted on Google Classroom. Fill-Ins - choose the best word to complete each sentence. Make sure to underline the words you add and use numbers. Be careful to copy exactly and watch out for spelling mistakes and punctuation. Antonyms are opposites. You need to leave a longer line so you can fill in the letter and word for the answer. Example: ___Q __question_____ 12. answer You will not use all the words. You may use dictionary.com to help if you are not sure of the words meanings.

We started by correcting our summaries from yesterday. Then we moved onto the paragraph section.

You will need to choose either 1 or 2 (from Nessie- Nasty or Nice? in your Mysteries Booklet) and then write a persuasive paragraph to convince your reader of the side you chose. The assignment is posted on Google Classroom. Write your assignment in your mystery notebook or on a piece of loose leaf paper if you don't have your notebook. Next we corrected all of our notes about Nessie. We used the same rubric as last time. It can be found on Google Classroom as well. Miss Riddell took in the notebooks and rubrics and will mark them as well, so you can see how your marking compares to hers. The next mystery article we do will be a summative on Note Taking.

Monday, October 5, 2020

Monday, October 5, 2020 (Day 1)

ELA 7C

Today we corrected the Fill-Ins sections and reviewed synonyms using the video below:

Synonyms are words that sound and look different but have almost the same meaning.

For example:  grin and smile are synonyms that both mean a happy expression

warm and hot are synonyms that both mean a higher temperature

Today you will be given a word and asked to find the best synonym from a list of words.  There may be a couple that fit but you need to look for the best one.

Some strategies to decide what will work best are:

1. Make up a sentence that both words will fit in and that makes sense

2. Use www.thesaurus.com and look up the synonyms for the given word

3. Look back at the original article for clues

When you are making your notes in your book remember to use a heading, the date, and number the choices.  Make sure to include the letter and the word of the best synonym.

We also discussed the "Construct a Paragraph" section and decided the sentences should go in the following order:  3, 6, 1, 5, 2, 4.  Students wrote a heading and copied the sentences into a paragraph, which was indented.

Students also started the Summarizing section.  They chose three of the five to do.  Then they read over the paragraph(s) and wrote the most important information down in one sentence.  This is homework for tomorrow.

ALT ELA

We started by finishing up the Making it Personal section from Chapter 17. Then we did the vocabulary words for chapter 18 before reading the chapter, answering the chapter questions, and completing the Making it Personal paragraph.  After a break we started the vocabulary for chapter 19, read chapter 19, answered the questions and did the Making it Personal on edible plants and bugs.

Some students went to the library for new books. We finished up an corrected the vocabulary words.  Then we did the next section on Fill-Ins.  Everyone made sure to do a nice heading, add the date, and then neatly copy and finish the sentences in their notebooks. If you are not sure of a word you can use one of these strategies:

a) see what word(s) are left at the end

b) use your vocabulary notes (or www.dictionary.com) to check the words meanings

c) re-read the article to see how the words were used in the text

We'll correct on Monday.  Students also got some time for silent reading, typing tutor, and we went for a short walk.  We also watched the following video on the Loch Ness Monster:
