FRENCH 7A

Three students were in the Chaise Chaud.  We reviewed the verb Avoir with a video and card games.
We also discussed how to use our French/English dictionaries.
For example:
If I am looking for the word combine as in the machine used at harvest I find the above.  The first choice "combiner" is a verb (vt, vi).  Then "association" is a noun (n). The correct choice is "moissonneuse-batteuse (-lieuse)" f.  The f means it is feminine so when you use it in a sentence you will need an une or a la.
Example:  Il a une moissonneuse-batteuse. (He has a combine.)
*Remember you need to include an une or a la when it is a feminine noun.

If I am looking for the word cat I will find n "chat" m.  This means cat is a noun and is masculine so when I use it in a sentence I will need an un or a le.
Example:  J'ai un chat.  (I have one cat.)  if I had 2 cats then the sentence would be J'ai deuxchats.
*Remember you need to include an un or a le when it is a masculine noun.
If I am looking for the word glasses I will find npl (spectacles) luneetes (fpl).  This lets me know the word is a plural noun (npl) and it is a feminine one (fpl) sp when I use it in a sentence I need to use les or des and add an s to show it is plural.
Example:
Elle a des lunettes.  (She has glasses.)
*Remember you need les or des and an s when it is a plural noun.
If I am looking for the word happy I will find adj heureux(-euse).    This means happy is an adjective (adj) and it can be masculine heureux (before the brackets) or feminine heureuse( by changing the ending to what is in the brackets.
Example:  Il est heureux.  (He is happy.)  OR Elle est heureuse. (She is happy.)
Note:  Some adjectives are the same for both feminine and masculine and won't change.
Example:  Il est triste.  (he is sad.)  Elle est triste. (She is sad.)

ELA 9A & 9B

The students had ten minutes of silent reading.  They then had the rest of the class to work on their Remembrance Day poem rough draft.  They will need to hand in their planning/rubric sheet, rough draft and a good copy at the end of class tomorrow.  So today they need to get their rough draft done (it is homework if not done during class).  Tomorrow we begin editing.

ADDING
=SUM(cell:cell)      example:  =SUM(C2:C18)
=C2+D2+E2

SUBTRACTING
=D2-C2

MULTIPLYING
=D5*D4
=D5*3

DIVIDING
=C5/C1
=C5/2

AVERAGE
=AVERAGE(C2:C16)

They then started on their summative task by choosing an item they wish to buy and calculating its cost with taxes and shipping.

ELA 9A

The students read for ten minutes.  We then watched the last part of "Storming Juno" and students finished their video analysis and handed it in.  Next we discussed a variety of poetry styles which may have a rhyme scheme (ABAB or ABCB or AABBA) or may use a repetitive phrase at the start or end of each stanza or may be a paragraph cut into phrases to create a poem or may be free verse.  We also went through the rubric for their Remembrance Day poem and discussed possible themes (remembrance, Soldiers, family, suffering, fighting, peace, pacifists, Red Cross, Heroes, enemies, locations).  The students had some time to brainstorm with a partner and fill out their planning sheet before starting a rough draft. ELA 9B

The students read for ten minutes.  We had 2 minutes of the video "Storming Juno" to finish up and then the students had time to complete their video analysis.
Next we looked at a variety of poems about war written in a variety of styles.  Some poems followed a rhyme scheme (ABAB or ABCB) but many did not.  Instead some used a repeated phrase at the start or end of each stanza. Some combined repetition and a rhyme scheme.  Others had no rhymes at all.  One poem was a paragraph, which was then cut into pieces to create a poem. For example the following sentence:
He is only aware of the movement of his mother's hand inside her purse looking for her handkerchief.
was rewritten to look like this:
He is only aware of
the movement of his
mother's hand inside
her purse looking

for her handkerchief.

Students will spend the next few classes working on a 25-32 line poem for the Legion's annual contest.

FRENCH 7B

Three students were in the Chaise Chaud.  Then we did a quick review of our pronouns and had a pop quiz.  Next we started to learn the conjugation of the verb AVOIR (to have).

example:  =SUM(C2:G2)
You can also add by using the + sign, example:  =C2+D2+E2

To average a column, highlight and hit the AVG key which will make the formula =AVERAGE(Cell:Cell)   example:  =AVERAGE(C2:G2)
You can also do this by adding and dividing, example:  =(C2+C3+C4)/3

To subtract values use the - sign, example:  =C6-H2

To multiply values use the * key, example:  =C7*A2   or   =C12*3

To divided values use the / key, example:  =C8/C3  or =C12/4

Tuesday, October 3, 2017 (Day 2)

ELA 9 A&B

CATs (Canadian Achievement Tests) have commenced.  The students were very focused today.  Thanks for doing your best.  Remember these tests are used to help your teachers to help you.  We do not place these results on Report Cards but students and their parents will be able to make an appointment to review the results once they have been scored.
On another note have you ever watched a cute CAT video on the Internet?  They are very popular and actually can act as a form of animal therapy.  If you need to de-stress after today's CATs watch these CATS:

COMPUTERS 8

The students continued using the SCRATCH programming language to make a program that will spell out their name.  They are mostly done writing out the coordinates they need for each letter and some have even started the programming.  We will be working on this project for one more class (on Thursday) before it becomes homework.

FRENCH 7A

The students went through the Chaise Chaud (Hot Seat) questions and practiced with a partner.  We reviewed the alphabet, days of the week, and numbers to 20.  Then we began learning about pronouns.

Monday, October 2, 2017

Monday, October 2, 2017 (Day 2)

*Grade 7 and 9 are undergoing CATs (Canadian Achievement Tests) this week.  Students cannot study for these tests but they should get a good night sleep and have a healthy breakfast for optimum results.  Tomorrow 9A will be in room 210 all morning (periods 1-3) and 9B will be there in period 5 & 6. Wednesday 9B will be in room 210 all morning (periods 1-3) and 9A will finish up on Thursday in periods 5 & 6.

ELA 9A

The students read for ten minutes and then worked on writing poems of the following varieties:

COUPLET - this simple rhyming pattern consists of two lines which rhyme and usually have a humourous twist.  Lines can be any length but the rhythm and rhyme should match the thought or mood of the poem.

ALLITERATION - this type of poetry uses the repetition of a sound in two or more neighboring words.  It is a bit like a tongue twister.

CONCRETE POETRY is written to show a visual as well as a written message.  They may be one word, a sentence, or more.  Think carefully about your word choices.

EPITAPHS - these short statements are often engraved onto tombstones in memory of someone who has died. Epitaphs may be humourous but are more often serious.

COMPUTERS 8

Today the students reviewed the basic command blocks for Scratch:   EVENTS (brown) to start program, PEN (green) to choose colour, size and pen up and down, MOTION (blue) your can move or glide, SOUND (purple) you can add a sound.  We also reviewed SPRITES which are the characters you use in Scratch and BACKGROUNDS which are for your stage.
Here is a link to a review of the (x,y) co-ordinate system:  Scratch Coordinate System
Students then planned out their name and its coordinates to eventually create a program that will write their name.  Here is an example of what their program might look like: UCHS2

French 7B

This class had CATs instead of French today.
