Thursday, November 14, 2019 (Day 1)

ELA 8A

The students read silently for ten minutes.   We finished watching the video from yesterday about a woman whose, brother, sister-in-law, and friend were murdered by their next door neighbour in a hate crime because they were Muslim.  We also discussed the following quote:
"Did you know that vampires have no reflections in a mirror? There's this idea that monsters don't have reflections in a mirror. And what I've always thought isn't that monsters don't have reflections in a mirror. It's that if you want to make a human being into a monster, deny them, at the cultural level, any reflection of themselves. And growing up, I felt like a monster in some ways. I didn't see myself reflected at all. I was like, ‘Yo, is something wrong with me? That the whole society seems to think that people like me don't exist?’ And part of what inspired me, was this deep desire that before I died, I would make a couple of mirrors. That I would make some mirrors so that kids like me might seem themselves reflected back and might not feel so monstrous for it." –Junot Diaz

The students then signed out the novel "Bifocal" by Deborah Ellis and Eric Walters and started an activity predicting what the novel will be about.

SENIOR FRENCH

The students wrote their summative exam on reading strategies and using Imparfait vs Passé Composé. If you were absent see Miss Riddell for a time to make this up. We also discussed two French programs, one is a three month exchange to Quebec. This is open to grade 10s and they would have someone from Quebec come to their home for three months in the fall and then they would go to Quebec and live with their partner's family for three months and attend school there.
The other is a five week immersion program in Quebec or another French speaking province that would take place over the summer. Applications are open to grade 10 & 11s and are due in February. More information can be found here: https://www.myexplore.ca/en/
